Acne Can Affect Anyone.

Although acne is most commonly experienced by teenagers and adults, it can affect anyone at any age. About 5% of women and 1% of men over the age of 25 experience episodes of acne.  There are 2 types of Acne: the teenager and the adult acne.  What do you have??

Shocking Information! Acne vulgaris (teenager acne)  is a near-universal skin condition. Approximately 80% of people worldwide have developed acne between puberty and 30 years of age. That’s right, almost everyone you know has had this.  This skin condition can affect adults too like the acne rosacea.    Acne skin condition can cause psychological and emotional turmoil to the long term sufferers.

CAUSES

  • Hormones

Again, hormones matter when it comes to acne skin condition, just like the pigmentation skin which I covered in my last blog.   

In the case of Acne Vulgaris (teenager acne), too much of progesterone (male hormone) in the body triggers the production of sebum.  However, in the case of acne rosacea (adult acne), scientist deduced that the cells that produce sebum have receptors for stress hormones, and hence if your body is constantly under stress, it produces too much of cortisol – the stress hormone, that increases inflammation and sebum production in the skin.

 The excess sebum caused by hormones affects P. acnes (a usually harmless skin bacterium), aggravating it to cause inflammation and pus. Hormones can also lead to a thickening of the inner lining of the hair follicle, causing blockage of the pores.

  • Genetics

If both your parents had acne, there’s a high likelihood that you’ll experience the same condition.  In this circumstances, stress management is very essential , for stress will further aggravate the acne condition and making it a challenge to heal the acne condition. 

  • Lifestyle

Smoking, unsuitable skincare, pore-clogging makeup, and climate effects can also contribute to hormonal changes, clogged pores and a disrupted sebum balance.

  • Medication

Certain medications such as steroids, lithium (prescribed for depression and bipolar disorder), bromides and iodides in cough medication, sedatives, and anticonvulsants can also cause acne flare-ups.

What Can You Do?

Put into your mind only positive thoughts and learn to manage your stress level to reduce cortisol stress hormone that causes inflammation and excessive sebum production.

You are what you think you are.  When you have healthy thought life,  your overall well beings improve and would reduce on the dis-ease and your dependency on drugs would reduce.

  1. Regulates the sebum production from the sebaceous glands
